New Pornographers, Henry Fonda Theatre, 9/29/05

So my friend shows up at my place at 8:30. I figure we should get to the show around 9pm. Instead of leaving, we get in a huge fight. Apparently I didn't want to see my friend's new striptease dance, and she didn't want to hear my newest song lyrics. An hour long screaming match which included the terms "abuser" and "psycho-bitch" left us with an actual departure time of 9:30.

The late departure actually turned into a good thing. We got to the Fonda and found out the NPs werent playing until 10:30. We headed back to my car and proceeded to smoke a couple of bowls.

We walk into the Fonda at around 10. I think Destroyer was playing. Didn't really care. The Fonda is a pretty run of the mill theatre/rock space. The carpet is funky, the paint is gold, and the chandeliers are cheap. We headed towards the balcony to look for some seats. Unfortunately all the seats were taken. We headed outside to a very cool little patio area on the roof of the place. It was a pretty sweet spot. There was a bar, some pool tables, couches, and a projection of the band on stage on one of the walls. While we were chilling outside, I realized that my friend and I were the only people of color on the patio. I guess you get what you pay for when you go to a canadian indie-pop show.

At about 10:45 the NPs go on. A new section of balcony seating opened up so my friend and I took a couple seats with red wine on the rocks in hand. NPs opened with Twin Cinema, and quickly followed with another song off their new album. I could tell right away that this band prides itself on its lo-fi sound. Small amps, simple drum beats, and not too much distortion. I was hoping they would crank it up a few notches when they played live. I guess not, oh well.

The set went on and they played all of my favorites. Mass Romantic, Slow Descent into Alcoholism, Electric Version, Fake Headlines...and so on. My favorite part was when one of their collaborators, Dan, came on the stage to sing various songs. He had a Heiniken in one hand and a mic in the other. Each time he came out for a song, he was that much more drunk. I'm not saying he hit every note, but he did a very good job for a canadian in LA. Two encores and a meal at Pete's Cafe later, I was asleep.

I am currently suffering a mild case of lock jaw thanks to the dentist.

Thursday

Okay its great that a cool guy like TP would recognize me. It also puts a bit of pressure on me. I am really lazy, and I don't like doing much. Right now I am drinking a Calimocho. Which is a glass of table wine on the rocks with some cola. The best ratio is 5 parts wine 1 part cola. I fell in love with this drink when I visited Spain in 2002. Specifically, I fell in love with the drink in San Sebastian Spain. I was eating a tasty little ham sandwich with a very beautiful local. She recommended the drink. I said, "huh?" She said its either that or beer with 7-up. "Ummm yeah, I'll take the wine and coke." It's a fucking fabulous drink.

I almost on my way to see The New Pornographers at the Henry Fonda. I've never been to that venue. Hope its cool. I am really getting addicted to the Wolf Parade album.

Wednesday

I guess sometimes they are right

The Wolf Parade album is really good. Check it out. Tried to put a link in this post but, my three year old laptop is slow...slow...slow.

I have been to Montreal once. It was in that wonderful year called 1989. I was young and did everything with my family, but I thought it was a real cool town. French everywhere. That's kinda classy.

Not a band from Montreal

Thursday

Pabst is getting way too trendy

Here's the story:

Two years ago I could buy 12 packs of Pabst Blue Ribbon for $3.99. Now, you go to any trendy/hipster bar in downtown and they are serving Pabst in cans. So when Pabst goes on sale at my local Savon (pronounced Sah-von) all the Pabst is gone. I'm left to drink the inferior Pabst Genuine Draft or some sort of Old Milwaukee. Lame.

Wednesday

DSL Back in Chinatown

Are the prices for broaband interworld connection too expensive? I just got my very first cell phone bill today. Looks like another ripoff.

Blogging in Class

I'm in my International Intellectual Property class right now. The subject matter is a little bit over my head, but it's interesting. The best part is that the professor is a really funny, liberal british dude. Here's a question I have: Are strict IP laws/standards liberal or conservative notions?

The Fall

I guess summer is almost over. I guess I should start caring about school now. NOT BLOODY LIKELY!! Heh Heh. Listening to a lot of New Pornographers. I'm getting ready to see them next Thursday. I have found a couple of really cool new blogs out there. Whatever. I think I'm gonna start posting pictures of all the girls I have made out with in real life and in my mind. Celebrities don't count. Unless it was a real make-out.
